Ingenious Geometers: the Art of Navigation

National Curriculum Science Area: Maths and Science

Key Stage: 3 and 4

Length of session: 1–2 hours

Maximum group size: 25–50 students

This is a maths and science session in which students look at the use of simple geometry in solving problems in the real world. Students will learn about the art of navigation and have the opportunity for hands-on exploration of instruments from the Museum’s collection.

They will also learn about Christopher Wren and the use of geometry in surveying. The session includes a mathematical problem to solve using measurement and geometry.

This session links with a session at the University Museum of Natural History and the cross-museum learning day ‘Trade and Exploration’.
